Home of Bersvend O. Draxten
Bersvend O. Draxten became the first Secretery and the first President of Sons of Norway. He was born October 26th. 1866 on a small farm called Pigarden in Draksten, Selbu kommune in Trøndelag. It is situated north of the Lake Selbusjøen. The way out there might be a little troublesome to find, as you have to drive along the Jonsvannet on Bratsbergvegen, then turn right on Drakstveien and hit the address Drakstvegen 906 on the left hand side.
He emigrated as a young child from Trondheim on April 29th.1867 together with his parents and 7 siblings. He was later married in Minneapolis 26. November 1902 to Julia Marie Thorp from Malvik outside Trondheim. They had 3 children.
Bersvend Olsen Draxten was one of the 18 men that met 16. January 1895 established the Sons of Norway i Minneapolis.
The homestead in Draksten is still standing. A memorystone of him was raised in 1989 near the stabbur on the farm.
